Lets face it, gas prices are not going down. Fortunately enough the prices have maintained in the $2.00 range. We break down several ways you can save money at the pump without having to spend unnecessary funds on your vehicles.
1. Air in tires - This is the most common way to save money on gas. If your tires are low, your vehicle has to use a little more power to turn a flat tire. Most of the time your tire pressure is listed on the inside of the driver door or you can go by what they recommend on the tire.
2. Engine Oil Levels - Its important to keep the oil in the engine at the proper levels to maintain the life of the engine, but its also a way to save on gas. Your engine does not have to work harder if it has the right amount of oil to keep everything inside properly lubed. You will also want to make sure to regularly change the oil to keep your engine from building up too much grime.
3. Air Filter - Make sure you check your air filter often. This has to be changed every so often as it builds up dirt from the elements. If your engine has restricted air flow, it will have to run harder. Its like a human with asthma. If a human cant breath, they have to work harder.
4. Speed Limits - Yes we all want to get to our destination quicker, but have you ever seen someone speed around traffic just for you to catch them at the same light? Follow the speed limits. Its safe and you will save money by not hitting the gas peddle so much. Going 10 to 20 mph over speed limits only saves an average of 2 to 3 minutes on a commute. No point!
5. Gear Box Fluid - Most people fail to realize their tires only spin when gears connect with the engine's power. If you have an SUV or Truck, mostly likely you have a differential. These have gears that turn in very thick oil. That oil breaks down and gets dirty, causing tension from the wheels to the engine. Making the engine have to run harder to turn the wheels.
6. Windows Up - Most vehicles are equipped with A/C. As this will draw a lot of power from the engine, it will be far less than having your windows down for your rear window to block the air. Car manufactures focus on aerodynamics with windows up. So rolling your windows down only creates a wind blocker when going down the road. This also applies to trucks with tailgates being up.
